Can't Turn A Lie Into The Truth

At first every U.S. war is supported by the masses but eventually the
truth is disclosed and U.S. misbehavior exposed - and then we hear about
the cover-ups, black operations, the massacres, prisoner abuse,
intentional targeting of civilians and the death and wounding of Americans
and it all seeps out slowly like an oozing wound. The truth has been
wounded so many times by lies that America is hardly capable of being
patched up and made to appear decent.

"To be a good target for the U.S. war on terrorism, a nation needs to be
relatively weak militarily. The Pentagon could not just go and bomb the
Soviet Union whenever it got the urge; nor could it even bomb Syria which
was closely tied to Moscow. It helps if the people of the terrorist state
are of swarthy complexion, for then the crusade against terrorism will be
reinforced by the ubiquitous racism of American society. And the ideal
terrorist state must indeed resort to terrorism at least occasionally. It
is far easier to construct a lie out of a half-truth than out of the
truth. The real level of terrorism, however, is unlikely to be adequate to
the needs of U.S. policy-makers, and therefore the target must be one that
can be readily provoked into committing some outrage when needed.
Provocation and exaggeration can transform the small-scale terrorist into
a world-class enemy." (Stephen Rosskamm Shalom, "Imperial Alibis", South
 End Press, 1993)
